Each spring Congregation Beth Israel celebrates Purim with the wonderful tradition of sending Purim Baskets to friends and family as well as collecting donations for the CBI Tzedakah Fund.

The Jewish tradition names four Mitzvot associated with Purim:

  • One is to HEAR THE STORY of Purim.
  • A second Mitzvah is to enjoy a FEAST of celebration.
  • A third Mitzvah is to SEND BASKETS OF FOOD
  • The fourth is to HELP THOSE IN NEED. (Book of Esther 9:20-22)

How can you fulfill these Mitzvot?

We invite you to join the tradition of MISHLOACH MANOT: the sending of Purim baskets to insure a tasty, sweet Purim. We all need and value our friends - giving gifts of food is a way of showing our connection with one another.

For $8.00 per recipient, you may send baskets to members of CBI as well as to your Rabbis, teachers and staff.  Members will receive ONE basket per household with a letter identifying ALL senders.

In addition, we invite you to participate in Matanot L’evyonim - helping those in need. The CBI Tzedakah fund will give 100% of all tzedakah donations to local non-profit organizations such as the Meals on Wheels and the IRC. Please also consider making a donation in the appropriate section of the CBI website, or mail a check made out to CBI, memoed "Tzedakah fund" to the CBI office (P.O. Box 320, Charlottesville, 22902).
